Aleks Sz. rarely confines their work to borders. Motivated by migration, mischief and flux, they instead explore the conventions of what goes where and why, poking at the paradoxes peeking from behind the veil of normalcy. They are captivated by peculiar intimacies, unorthodox griefs and unpalatable frustrations that break the script of a single monolithic human experience. Their recent works use the shared language of subculture to challenge how we dance around these broken scripts, both figuratively and literally – navigating external conflicts through ritual behaviours, finding unity through agonistic performance and cultivating unrestrained freedoms in controlled spaces.
At a magnified scale, their work is a response to the restraints of conformity under a wasteful, warmongering and individualistic hypercapitalist social order. Their use of assemblage, found objects
and re-usable components serves as an ethical framework for their studio practice, preserving the sanctity of the object on its journey between the gallery and the trash heap.
